Grant Thompson
(H.O.D. Of the Manukau Institute of Technology Faculty of Creative Arts)

For my Final presentation I Installed my work as if I was selling Shirts at the Flea market and thought of ways that i could present it and in these photos as you can see I hanged up my shirts with the coat hangers with my printed logo design on top and on the tables I covered the table with a Lavalava which matched the colours of the shirts. Next I had an idea of printing out 3 slips of paper and wrap the paper around the shirts and glue the ends together. Afterwards I then taped up the $20 sign just to show how much the shirts would cost and then I folded the shirts by displaying the design for people to have a closer look.

Overall I am happy with the amount of time I had to do all the tasks and completing my assignments on time although I could have extra time but I challenged myself into completing things on time and I also had an assist with my good friend Nia who is always supportive of my work and I appreciate everything she has done for me. I am also thankful for those who immediately took interest in my work and this is just the beginning of what is yet to come so I am happy with the result and hopefully I get to expand my knowledge of design.

FINAL PROJECT RESULTS

These are the results of my designs and prints and to be honest I am happy with what I have produced in the amount of time I have used and happy with the result as you can see in the photos. I later posted the photos up on Facebook and it became a hit especially with the Aiga Strong T shirts where a lot of people wanted one so this may be a good start as i am willing to progress in this industry of Print media/ T-Shirt Printing. and on top is my logo company design which I roughly illustrated.

Overall I enjoyed making and creating these designs although at times i found it frustrating to come up with Ideas but at the end of it all I am really happy with my work and this is just the beginning of what may happen in the near future.

Final Designs

Psalms 133

1 Corinthians 9: 24

Joshua 1:9

These are my final designs as I am going to attempt to print 9 white shirts and print with 2 colours (Black and Red) and hopefully the result will end up just like the designs. each of these shirts will be different sizes so in other words i will have 1 design for 3 different sized shirts.

Example:

1 DESIGN = 3 SHIRTS

AIGA STRONG: 6XL, 3XL, L

SIAMUPINI: 5XL, 2XL, M

These are just a few T shirts of Taga Tanuvasa who is also a good friend of mine and who first taught me how to print on shirts. His work has inspired me to make t shirts such as these and is also similar to the concept of my work. So for my final project I have decided to use 3 colours which are White. Black, and Red so i am going to do 9 white shirts and print Black and Red on all shirts.

Research - Presentation

I went to the Otara Flea Markets and saw a few shops and how they presented their shirts. So what I did was i took photos of all the stalls that were in the Otara Markets.

This helps me with how i am going to install my work and so far it has given me ideas on how to present my shirts.

For my Final presentation I am going to present my work as if i was selling my shirts in the Markets as shown in these photos

Artist Research - Bulky Boy

Bulky Boy

Burger Boy

Bulky Boy is a clothing company created in 2000 which is based in San Diego, California and they design, print, and sell clothes for men who live large. they make a lot of designs with Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan, and all other pacific nation patterning or designs.

I find this cool because not only the designs are cool but i like the way how they added their logo in their design which i find helpful with my designs and which also signifies who made the prints and designs which will attract people to get them to buy one of your products which i find very useful.

Sam's Island Gear is a T shirt printing company in which they design, print, and sell South Pacific/Polynesian T-shirts as you can see some of the designs that i have selected as my favourite designs from this company. They are based in Glen Eden and Grey Lynn in Auckland, New Zealand.

This will help me with designing and printing t shirts and will also help me with ideas whereas this is what i want to do for my final project. I have also seen their T-shirts being sold at the Otara Flea Market and whenever i have the chance to go there the first place i will go to is Sam's Island Gear.

ARTIST RESEARCH - Popo Hardwear

Up top is the website or artists that I have researched on t shirt designs.
POPO stands for People Of the Pacific Ocean and the artists are Siliga David Setoga, Malisha Luisa Lefao-Setoga, and Stephen Isaac Paea. Popo Hardwear focuses on Pacific Island Kiwis that speaks about who we are as Pacific Islanders living in a different countries, and it is also about challenging the way they are perceived and fighting over societal cliches.

I chose to research these artists because this is going to help me with my project which is screen printing T-Shirts and this also helps me to come up with ideas such as these images. This is also the type of designs i want to do to relate to the Samoan Community.

These images below are the images that stood out to me and is going to help or assist me with ideas on what to design.

Artist Research - Edith Amituanai

These Photographs were taken in 2007 by New Zealand Photographer Edith Amituanai. this series of photos are called Dejeuner, which is a French word meaning for lunch. Philemon Toleafoa is one of the main subjects for Edith who is from Auckland who plays rugby in France and has been in France when he was 19 years of age, he said that he misses the family get togethers for lunch at his Grandma's house which motivated Edith to take photos for this series because of Toleafoa being homesick.

Edith Amituanai is Samoan from Auckland, she graduated from Unitec in 2005 receiving a Bachelor of design course and was considered a rising star in New Zealand's new generation of photographers, with work held in Te Papa and Auckland Art Gallery. Her subjects are the Samoan Community in New Zealand, and all generations and how they interact with each other.

Edith became interested in making this series because she not only knew but she is also related to some Samoan rugby players, she calls it the "Third Wave Migration" as Samoans go out to seek new opportunities just like their parents did when they migrated to New Zealand.

I can relate to Edith with my experience with my parents how they left the Isle of Samoa and how they migrated to New Zealand in the 1990's and in 1995 that was the year that i was born here in New Zealand and here I am currently seeking for opportunities as not only a photographer but also an artist. I also like the subjects that she is focusing on which is Samoan people seeking new opportunities and focusing on how this generation is reacting with each other which nowadays we use social media and technology whereas back in the day they used telephones or black and white coloured televisions and stuff like that which i find interesting.

Camera wise this will benefit me when i go out to take photos of people either friends or family. This may also help me with my final project for this course paper as i am looking for ideas on how to set a camera and which angles must i use and how far or how close I want the subject to be whether in focus or out of focus, using shallow or deep depth of field. It also helps me where i want to put the subject by using composition whether to put it on the left, right or centre, put them either on the fore, mid, or Background. Either way this will help me a lot.
